The Gardens of la Merced

Jardines de la MercedAlso known as the Colon (Columbus) Gardens, they were always known for their proximity to the old convent of the friars of La Merced. The area was one of the natural exits from the city towards the north. The gardens are decorated with a fountain in the middle, dating from the late 19th century, surrounded by beds of roses, bushes and a wide range of species of trees. In the middle of the gardens lies the modern mosque of Al-Morabito, which is a modern working mosque. The Colon and Ferroviario schools stand on two of the corners. The fountain dedicated to the women of Cordoba was built recently and situated in front of one of the entrance gates to the park: it symbolises the connections the city has had with its water supply since Roman times. There is a fine view from the gardens of the old Baroque convent of La Merced, which nowadays is the Provincial Government building.
