Church of San Salvador and Santo Domingo de Silos or ...

The popular name of this church is la Compañía (the Company), since it was built by the Jesuits (the Company of Jesus) together with the whole building next to Santa Catalina School. The church is enormous, in the shape of a Latin cross, with a spherical dome and a lantern, and was built by Hernán Ruiz II and finished in 1589. Inside the church, there are several works of great artistic value, such as the paintings of Pablo de Céspedes, a sculpture by Duque Cornejo on the main altar, or the sacristy with its well-preserved 18th century furniture. The school, in which the poet Luis de Góngora y Argote studied until he was 14, was kept running until the year 1767, when the Jesuits were expelled from Spain. In its day, it was considered one of the best schools in Andalusia; and its marvellous library was taken over by the Bishop of Cordoba.
