The Tourist Observatory of the City of Cordoba is an initiative by the Cordoba Town Hall in collaboration with the Caja General de Ahorros de Granada Savings Bank, through the Sociedad de Estudios Económicos de Andalucía (Andalusian Society for Economic Studies - ESECA in Spanish), and with the participation of the tourist sector. It was launched in the second half of 2001 and since 2003, the Cordoba Local Tourist Board has been responsible for running it. The Tourist Observatory is a tool for compiling statistics and generating information about tourist activity in the city, producing systematic, up-to-date and well-ordered statistics - which gives us an extremely valuable competitive advantage.
The Observatory was created to supply the need for reliable tourist information about the city. Although there is considerable tourist information in our country on a national scale, it is rather scarce when it comes down to smaller, more narrowly-defined areas such as provinces or municipal boroughs. In the case of Cordoba, the information available was scant, scattered and difficult to obtain.
