Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Linares

Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Linares Situated right in the heart of the mountains of Cordoba, this sanctuary dates back to the time of the Christian conquest.  According to popular tradition, King Fernando III 'the Saint' founded the hermitage right next to an Arabic watchtower which used to exist here. The plain exterior leads to the church which has one nave and a transept, with a low temple in the presbytery holding a statue of the church's patron, made in 1600. One of the most attractive of all the paintings which hang in the sanctuary is the Capitulation of Cordoba to  San Fernando, from 1800. There are other top quality works by Zambrano, Antonio del Castillo and Juan de Alfaro. At each end of the transept there are altarpieces with 16th-17th century influences.
