The River Guadalquivir, the great river of Andalusia, with "its noble sands, now no longer golden". By its banks grew the Roman Corduba, the Moslem Qurtuba and the Christian Cordoba. Since time immemorial, its eternally flowing waters have turned water mills, used either to carry water, so highly prized by the Arabs in Al-Andalus, or to grind cereals, the mainstay of the Mediterranean diet.
